FAQs

We are excited that you are considering being part of Stumptown Volleyball! Below are answers to some of the most common questions families have about our club, tryouts, practices, tournaments, and season expectations.

OUR CLUB PHILOSOPHY

What is the Stumptown philosophy?

At Stumptown, our primary focus is on individual player development and improvement rather than team rankings or records. We want to help every player grow their skills, confidence, volleyball knowledge, and love for the game.

How is playing time determined?

Playing time is guaranteed but not necessarily equal. Playing time is based on factors such as:

  • Attitude and sportsmanship

  • Hustle and effort

  • Work ethic and commitment

  • Being a good teammate

  • Continued improvement and application of skills

Our goal is to provide every player with meaningful opportunities to develop and contribute to their team.

TRYOUT INFORMATION

What happens if my player is offered a spot?

Players who are offered a position on a Stumptown team will receive a Letter of Commitment. Both the player and a parent/guardian must sign the letter to accept the position.

What does signing the Letter of Commitment mean?

The CEVA Letter of Commitment is an agreement between the player, their family, and the volleyball club confirming their commitment to the team for the upcoming season.

Once the player and parent/guardian sign the Letter of Commitment, the player is committed to Stumptown and the team position offered. This means the family has accepted the roster spot and is no longer participating in the club selection process.

Players who have signed a Letter of Commitment should not continue attending tryouts or pursuing roster positions with other clubs.

We ask families to take this commitment seriously. Clubs rely on these agreements to finalize rosters, plan teams, and make commitments to other players and coaches.

Our goal is to build teams with players and families who are excited, invested, and committed to being part of the Stumptown community for the entire season.

When are tryouts?

All tryouts will be held at Fulton Community Center: 68 SW Miles St, Portland, OR

Will there be a second tryout?

No. We do not plan to hold a second tryout. We make every effort to select players by the end of their scheduled tryout time that day.If an age group has enough players to form multiple teams, final team placements may be determined at a later date. During this time, players in that age group may practice together until teams are finalized.

How often will teams practice?

Each team will practice two days per week, Monday through Thursday.

Specific practice days, times, and locations will be finalized once teams have been formed.

What is the anticipated practice schedule?

•U14: 1–2 teams

•U16: 1–2 teams

•U18: 1 team

What if my player participates in multiple sports?

We absolutely encourage athletes to participate in multiple sports! We believe playing different sports helps develop well-rounded athletes and valuable skills. We understand that conflicts may occasionally arise with practices or matches, and we do not hold participation in other sports against a player.

We do ask families to communicate scheduling conflicts with their coach in advance whenever possible so that teams can plan accordingly. We also encourage players to attend as many practices and tournaments as their schedules allow.
